Challenges of Business Communication
Business
communication has never been more important than it is today. However, the
workplace of today has many challenges that didn’t exist in the past, and one
of those challenges is communication. For many business professionals today, it
is required to communicate with others in organization regularly, both
internally and externally. This might seem like an easy thing to do; however,
there are many challenges facing business communication today some of which are
discussed below:
1) Lack of face-to-face interaction
Face-to-face
interactions are important for building trust and encouraging healthy
relationships among co-workers. When the workers are able to discuss directly
with their boss or another colleague about the work, they are more likely to
understand their expectations and feel motivated by a sense of shared
responsibility.
A huge
challenge of today’s workplace is remote workers who do not interact
face-to-face on a regular basis. Those who live and work outside of an office
environment can struggle with communication because there are fewer
opportunities for people to bounce ideas off each other.
2) Email and Texting Challenges
When it
comes to business communication, email and texting have made our lives much
easier; however, they can also lead to serious challenges if not used wisely. In
fact, most people spend more time on social media than interacting with people
in person. This poses a challenge for all parties involved because some
misunderstandings arise due to miscommunication through text or email. That
means that you may not be aware if your message is being received positively or
negatively.
3) Diversity Challenges
Diversity in
workplace is one of the top challenges in today’s business world. With
globalization, companies are no longer confined within a national territory. A
company based in one country can operate in multiple countries simultaneous. This
requires people from different cultures, nations, ethnicity who speak different
languages to work together. In such situation it is a highly challenging to
effectively communicate across cultures and overcome language and culture
barriers.
4) Technology Challenges
Technology
is a double-edged sword for business communication. Technology has made
business communication easier and more efficient than ever before. However,
it’s also caused a new set of challenges for professionals hoping to use
technology as an effective communication tool.
In our
country like Nepal, for example, internet based communication such as emails
are yet to become the mainstream due to the lack of irregularity provisions and
easy accessibility. This means that companies that use Technologically-based communication
enabled communications will have to face challenges while communicating with
companies and government Agencies that are yet to adopt modern communication
technology.
5) Untrained workforce
Sooner or
later, many businesses discover that their employees are not equipped to do
what’s required due to frequent technological updates. In addition, with
advancements in technology and other methods for communicating (such as
texting), traditional face-to-face communication skills may have decreased in
relevance. In this context, the lack of trained workforce has become a serious
challenge for companies.
6) Information overload
The amount of information we’re expected to consume in a typical day has increased dramatically over time. Emails, tweets, SMS messages, voicemail messages etc. have filled one’s life. It is quite challenging for a business professional to check the relevancy of the information.
