C. Complete the sentences by choosing the correct word given in brackets.

a) Does television affect children? (affect/effect)

b) Does television have an effect on children? (affect/effect)

(Idea: Affect is usually a verb, and it means to impact or change. Effect is usually a noun; an effect is the result of a change.)

Affect:  असर गर्नु  

Effect: असर

c) Could you lend me your book, please? (borrow/lend)

d) Can I borrow your pen? (borrow/lend)

(Idea: “Borrow” means to take something from another person, knowing you will give it back to them. “Lend” means to give something to another person expecting to get it back.)

Borrow: उधारो माग्नु    

Lend: उधारो दिनु

e)      Prices seem to rise every year. (Raise/rise)

f)       You can raise your hand if you want to ask a question. (Raise/rise)

[Idea: The verbs raise and rise both refer to something going "up". The main difference between them is that raise is transitive (it must have a direct object) and rise is intransitive (no direct object).]

Raise: उठाउनु      

Rise: माथि उठ्नु

g)      What did he tell to you? (say/tell)

(say focuses on the words of the speech. When you use say, you relay the words that were said. Tell focuses more on the message of what someone said. Usually, you also mention who the person listening is.)

Say: बोल्नु   

Tell: भन्नु

h) I can't speak Hindi. (speak/talk)

i) I will talk to you on the phone. (speak/talk)

[Speak usually only focuses on the person who is producing the words. Talk focuses on a speaker and at least one listener, and can mean 'have a conversation']

j) I think that's a very sensible idea. (sensible/sensitive)

k) My teeth are very sensitive to cold. (sensible/sensitive)

[Sensible means that you 'have good judgement' or 'are very practical'. Sensitive is related to feelings.]

l) Our principal is a popular person. (principal/principle)

m) I couldn't understand the principle of gravity. (principal/principle)

[A principle is a rule, a law, a guideline, or a fact. A principal is the headmaster of a school or a person who's in charge of certain things in a company.]

n) All friends, except Nabina, came to the party. (accept/except)

o) Will you accept my request? (accept/except)

[Accept means to agree or to receive something offered. Except means excluding or with the exception of.]

Accept:  à¤¸्वीकार गर्नु      

Except: बाहेक

p) They were making too much noise . (noise/sound)

q) All she could hear was the sound of the waves. (noise/sound)

[Sound is what we hear. Noise is unwanted sound.]

Noise: कोलाहल   

Sound: आवाज

r. Did you give him any advice for his career? (advice/advise)

s. My parents advise me to be a teacher. (advice/advise)

[“advise” (with an S) is a verb that to recommend, or to give information to someone. On the other hand, “advice” (with a C) is a noun: an opinion or recommendation offered as a guide to action.]
