Will and be going to

A. Look at these examples.

A: Gita is in hospital.

B: Oh, really? I’ll go and visit her.

A: Gita is in hospital.

B: Yes, I know. I’m going to visit her this evening.


Difference between 'Will' and 'be going to'

Will + infinitive

(Will + V1)

Be going to + infinitive

(Be going to + V1)

Will + V1 is used with a decision that is made at the moment of speaking

Be going to + V1 is used with a decision which is made before the moment of speaking

It is used with a prediction based on opinion.

It is used with a prediction based on something we can see (or hear) now

It is used with future fact

 

It is used for promises / requests / refusals / offers
